Our 8 year old Golden was diagnosed with Heartworm. What is the treatment for this affliction and what is our next step?

My vet has diagnosed my 4 month old puppy with demodex (mange). She has suggested dip treatments but all the information I find concerning the chemicals in the dip treatment, point to dangerous and harsh side effects. Are there any more humane treatments for this condition?
