House Soiling

My dog has been urinating more frequently than normal the past few days. He has had two accidents inside of the house today and yesterday. He didn't even have accidents inside the house when he was a puppy, so this is very unusual for him. My dog is an English Springer Spaniel born on October 31st 2000.

When a dog suddenly begins to eliminate indoors, the first thought should be a possible medical problem. An infection in the urinary tract either in the kidneys or urinary bladder may result in house soiling. Changes in the urinary tract such as kidney failure can also lead to increased water consumption and an increase in urination. Other problems to consider include an endocrine problem that has increased water consumption so that the dog has to urinate more frequently and if they are not able to get outside often enough they may urinate indoors. Finally, other metabolic problems can also cause increased water consumption and therefore an increase in urination. A veterinary examination, blood tests and a urinalysis are necessary to establish a diagnosis so that appropriate treatment can be started.
